More than 26 000m of pipes replaced in two months

A total of 26 409m of pipes - 7 104m of water pipes and 19 305m of sewer pipes - were replaced during July and August 2024, the first two months of the 2024/2025 financial year. This comes off the back of a very successful proactive infrastructure maintenance and upgrade programme for the previous financial year where the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate successfully replaced 111% of water pipes and 96% of sewer pipes in several planned projects across the City.

Replacing aged water and sanitation infrastructure remains a top priority for the City's Water and Sanitation Directorate. For the 2024/2025 financial year, the City is investing R323 million to ambitiously once again aim to replace 50 000m of water pipes and 100 000m of sewer pipes in several projects city-wide.

The City is working hard to action its Water Strategy to ensure high-quality drinking water into the future and a reliable wastewater service to help provide a dignified service to citizens as well as a healthy environment. 

July and August were two very busy months for the City's teams as they kicked off the projects for the current financial year:

• Over 7 104m water pipes were replaced in Bloubergstrand, Eversdal Heights, Wellway Park, Avondale, Atlantis, Loevenstein, Flamingo Vlei, Somerset West, Strand, Retreat, Bellville Phase 2 and Parow

• Over 19 305m sewer pipes were replaced in Claremont, Parow, Parow North, Gugelethu, Sacks Circle and Bellville, Brackenfell, Stikland, Southfield, Eerste River, Strand, Somerset West and Belhar.
  

Some of these projects have been carried over from the previous financial year.

'Our pipe replacement programme will remain a top priority for the City to ensure our water and sewer infrastructure is in tip-top shape, to reduce the number of pipe bursts and sewer spills and to provide efficient water and sanitation services. We thank our residents for their patience while this essential work was being completed in their areas. We look forward to seeing more of this proactive work over the coming months across our city,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Water and Sanitation, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.
